I woke up just before five this morning and couldn’t get back to sleep. It was under an hour until the alarm was going to go off anyway, but I try not to start my day so early. But it pretty soon became clear my brain wasn’t going to let me get back to sleep. It’s kind of dumb, how much the brain—in an active sense, not doing its passive job of keeping the body going—screws with sleep. Isn’t sleep battery mode for the brain? Shouldn’t the brain want sleep? It’s like consciousness isn’t an evolution but a disease.
