Open mattes and aspect ratios

I spent a while thinking about why I prefer matting my open matte DVDs. It’s pretty simple in the end. It’s about headroom. Open matte has too much headroom and the framing of shots looks, right or wrong, like television to me. Imagine a TV movie shot like any pre-sixties Academy Ratio film. There’d be depth, there’d be texture, there’d be tons of things TV movies rarely if ever have. It’s changed somewhat with HDTV–though I haven’t seen many TV movies since 1998–and probably for the better. So I don’t know if open matte transfers just remind me of TV movies or actually look like them. I don’t have the energy to figure out that question. I’m too busy matting open matte transfers.
