One of the big things when I was in my late teens was identifying didactic storytelling. One of the big things in my mid-twenties was coming to understand the difference between didactic and propagandic. Really, Oxford says propagandic is a word and Apple doesn’t. I double-checked Oxford and, while they’re kind of being tools these days, they’re going to be right on an adjective dating back to the nineteenth century. There’s a pedigree to that word. Anyway. Getting over my misconception of didactic narratives was a big deal. I actually credit old movies more for it than anything I read. Definitely MFA school helped, but it and old movies were simultaneous and I was applying things learned in class to these movies.
