Ennui is not a great word and not just because its spelling leaves something to be desired. At first glance, it seems like a good word–but then it quickly becomes one of those words someone overuses in a sophomore year high school term paper because they’ve read it in a book recently. According to Merriam-Webster–remember when you couldn’t get definitions for free from MW–ennui is a specific kind of boredom, it is “the feeling of jadedness that can result from living a life of too much ease.” Actually, maybe it is a great word for talking about white privilege, but far less of a great word for talking about words. Then again, I don’t like many words.
