Do you remember when area codes mattered? You’d always make note of a new one you came across, whether you’d heard of it or not, how much area it covered. I’ll never forget finding out (616) was basically the area code for most of Michigan. I would’ve made this discovery during the great (708) and (847) split. (708) is a great area code for the eighties—it just looks like it belongs on the number for Elek-Tek—and (847) has a certain sturdy feel to it. It feels very nineties, very snug. The visual appeal of number combinations, based on regional and class based experiences. Hence, an enthusiasm. Or something.
