Would I recommend The Summing Up? No. Not to a Maugham fan, not to a fan of authors’ memoirs. I’ll never read it again. However, if someone were writing about early twentieth century theater? Maybe early twentieth century fiction? Definitely. Maybe even philosophy as it relates to fiction writers. I’ve gone from being so thrilled with The Summing Up I quoted it on this site’s about page, named the site after it, planned the whole "reading Maugham for the blog" thing, to being completely indifferent. Well, not completely. I’m on the negative about it. Maybe–in 1938–as an ephemeral read, I’d have a different take on The Summing Up, but certainly not in 2016.
