Maugham gets to Of Human Bondage, but only at the very end of the chapter. He talks generally about not being ready to write it when he first started working on it. It’s a two paragraph chapter. The first chapter is an endless series of commas, semicolons, and even colons. It’s a rambling, directionless rant, completely missing the monologue feel of the previous chapter. There’s not enough information, which doesn’t usually present a problem in The Summing Up, but there’s not enough writing either. Maugham’s on autopilot.
