One of the most reassuring signs of civilization, at least until I got to Colorado, was seeing the brightly lighted interiors of Chinese restaurants at night. Bright lights—probably some kind of leftover from A Christmas Story too—but also because there was one across the street from the video store I worked at, the video store I frequented before working there. It was a fixture. And it wasn’t particularly bright, but then there was this other Chinese restaurant over by the T.J. Maxx and you could see it from a block away the lights were so bright. It’s just a image I have stuck in my head. The Chinese restaurant, open late for a not fast food place, visible not just for its signage, but because of the interior lights visible from a block or more away.
