I used “Only Nixon Could Go to China” in conversation last week. I always wish I’d have to stones to use “Only Kirk Could Go to Khitomer” but I’m not cool enough. I don’t know who would be cool enough. Prince could’ve done it. Things can only happen in certain conditions—something I’d know more about if I’d paid attention in science classes, I’m sure—but it’s pretty much everything. The minutiae builds up and creates the situation for something to occur and it does because of that situation. Creatively speaking—and socially speaking—these events can’t be recreated without a change in the situation, which then changes the event. Pierre Menard couldn’t write Don Quixote if Cervantes hadn’t first.
