Sometimes I’m worried about getting soft critically. I skip so much, putting it off until later; the “significant” new movies I’d think I’d want to see and write about. But there’s so much other stuff. Bergman, for example. I’m pretty sure Bergman is the best filmmaker in terms of average quality and number of films. Kurosawa is up there too, but I’ll bet it’s Bergman. I haven’t even watched Chimes at Midnight. I haven’t even watched Roma. Instead I watch something I know is going to be bad but is going to be obvious. I’m not going to have to think hard during watching or writing about it later. I’m not indifferent to my film enthusiasm, I’m indifferent to how I engage it, which is sort of strange.
