One of my favorite words is monograph. The OED definition is “a detailed written study of a single specialized subject or an aspect of it.” I first heard the word in undergrad. Other people might have heard it in high school, but I didn’t pay attention in high school. The detailed written study of a single specialized subject or aspect of that single specialized subject. When I wanted to collect Comics Fondle posts, which is a difficult idea—who wants to read a bunch of single issue reviews collected and how to even collect them—I called it BAM (Basically a Monograph), because technically it was a detailed written study of a single specialized subject—Gerry Conway’s Batman comics from the eighties, for example. Only maybe it should’ve been OAM (Ostensibly a Monograph), as the “chapters,” though detailed, were written separately from one another and not meant to be considered as a whole. Perhaps I’ll collect The Narrow Corner posts from Summing-Up as a monograph. “BAM” has been taken by something else in the meantime. I like typesetting and page laying out way more than I should. It’s not a cheap or purposeful hobby.
