Almost without exception—I mean, Rush Hour 3, no—I will see any Max von Sydow movie. When I discovered he was in Bergman a lot, it was just bonus to what’s already going to magnificent. I think it started because of Dreamscape. von Sydow is the good old doctor who trains Dennis Quaid to use his psychic powers for, you know, good. von Sydow’s face, weathered even when he was young, looks like it’s seen horrors uncountable and maybe even joys unimaginable. It works great for Bergman, it works great for even Judge Dredd to some capacity—but it doesn’t work when von Sydow’s not playing a person. When he’s too supernatural, he’s just wasted. He should never be wasted.
