I am a big fan of the film Diner. Everyone should see it. At least five times. Not once, not twice, not thrice, but five times. There’s a lot in Diner. There’s also a line about marriage—the newlywed groom is griping about going home to find his wife there all the time. I’m not sure when I started to notice such an absence—my wife works Monday through Friday, I work Tuesday through Sunday. I used to have some Fridays off and it never felt quite like these Mondays do. The house is too empty. She’s too absent. The whole point of choosing to share your days, nights, weeks, months, years with someone else is you don’t want them absent.
