I just saw this film myself a couple of weeks ago and I was expecting just another lame Joanne Woodward vehicle, but, like you, I found myself pleasantly surprised. The film is small and intimate, but I found myself moved by it's unspoken power. I'm still really not sure what it was that really made me feel for these people on the screen, especially since Woodward's character is hardly the warmest person, but something hit a nerve and I can't get this film out of my head. Your excellent review perfectly summed up everything I was thinking!
Reply - <a href="#" class="quote" onclick="quote('2136','Dame James Henry','I just saw this film myself a couple of weeks ago and I was expecting just another lame Joanne Woodward vehicle, but, like you, I found myself pleasantly surprised.

Gilbert Cates, who I’ve never heard of …

Really?

Gilbert is also known as “Gil” Cates.

Is that name familiar?

No?

Well, he also directed “I Never Sang For My Father,” and “Oh God, Book II” before turning to mostly Made-For-TV movies.

Later, he began producing the Academy Awards telecasts starting in 1990 or so. He’s done most of them since.
